Worked well for whats it’s intended
I like having options! I use this in my left hand and my actual pistol in the right. I know this is non lethal but I wouldn’t want to take a shot from it. It has some zip on the pepper balls! The only problem I see is that you get two shots. The laser really helps make sure you stay on target though. I think this is well thought out very functional. It is also great for someone that wants to defend themselves but may also have some kids around. The kids wouldn’t enjoy this but at least it’s not forever.

Highly Effective non Lethal Protection
This gun is very ergonomic and easy to operate. It is highly effective even when deployed merely as a deterrent. The impact of the round is extremely painful, and the pepper spray is highly effective. The only drawback is that the rounds are expensive, so practicing can put a dent in your wallet.

Great non-lethal product alternative for personal protection
This non-lethal product is great quality and is the perfect alternative to have at your disposal when a firearm is not available. This is especially a great companion for those who like exploring the great outdoors, especially national parks. Here in Colorado it is illegal to carry a firearm into any national park even with a conceiled carry permit, so this nitrogen powered pepper projectile HERO 2020 non-lethal weapon is the perfect alternative to carry legally. You never know who or what you could possibly encounter in the woods when hiking or camping and this product should give some piece of mind knowing that you can at least defend yourself if needed. The combination of the nitrogen cartridge releasing a synthetic capsaicin (PAVA) pepper projectile that has powerful heat and irritation properties should be enough of a deterrent to anyone or anything for your own personal safety. And if one isn’t enough of a deterrent then there is another left in the cartridge ready to go. The added combination of rechargeable flashlight and red laser should also help be the first line of deterrent before having to resort to the release of a pepper projectile. This product is durable being made with ABS material and a metal trigger and the pepper projectile nitrogen filled cartridges are heavy duty. Each cartridge holds 2 pepper projectiles and more of these cartridges can be purchased on the HERO website (2 canisters are $29). A training cartridge is included for getting used to the system prior to using the one with the pepper projectiles. There is a very nice nylon hard shell case with foam and zippered mesh pocket interior included for storage of the gun and cartridges. There is also a micro-USB cable included for charging the gun’s flashlight and laser. I want to thank the seller of this product for the opportunity of receiving and reviewing this awesome product which I highly recommend to everyone else who is interested in a non-lethal form of protection.

Excellent alternative to firearms
I’m a proponent of our 2A and believe in our right for self protection. However, there are some laws that can get one in trouble if self protection was executed wrongfully. That said, this is an excellent alternative option to a firearm. This gun is a completely self contained system not requiring any magazines, cleaning, adjusting, nothing. The built-in light and laser are bright and are automatic, meaning, when you pull the trigger, they turn on.Each cartridge contains two pava rounds. The kits comes with a training cartridge as well.Like a taser, this can be used as a first line of defense depending on the situation before escalating to an actual firearm. However, this should give you enough time and distance to relocate to safety while you call law enforcement.Check your local laws for the use and restrictions on less lethal weapons before purchasing.Overall, the gun is a very good tool for self defense and I highly recommend it for anyone concerned with their safety or when traveling to unsafe areas.

Well thought out
Let’s start with the fact that I haven’t used it, and I hope I never have to. That being said – inspecting the package it was shipped in, this is a well thought out well engineered and solid weapon.I would start by saying that the overall size ergonomic feel and weight of the weapon is very good.I really like the safe feature for when the unit is armed and ready to fire there is both a light and a laser, which is unmistakable. The cartridges themselves take a little bit of effort to locate in the slots to slide in and “connect” with the base unit. But this is nothing that seems overly challenging. The case instructions, charging cord, and other items shipped all seem to be well thought out as well. All in all, I would say that this as a “starter package” can bring a decent amount of peace of mind to someone who otherwise doesn’t want a firearm in the house.

great design
Check local laws and property rules. This is a well thought out self defense weapon it is compact and packs a punch. the range of 12 -15 feet is a safe distance to keep an assailant away. the light and the laser help insure your shot hits it’s mark. with a speed of 250 feet per second the impact will be felt and the cloud of irritant will be large enough to cover the eyes nose and mouth of an assailant if hit in the chest area. We live in a small town and our daughter is away for college in a larger city, yes she knows how to use a bang bang but can’t have one on campus. This is a solution to not being allowed to carry a bang bang on campus ( we checked with the school and this is allowed ). Please check local laws and rules before carrying or using products of this type.

Review without using in real life dangerous situation
Thankfully I am in a place to review this item without having had to use it in a real life situation requiring self defense.Based on set up, ease of training and product- I am confident I would be able to use this self dense gun if the situation arises. It is light weight and very easy to handle. There are plenty of instruction regarding use and training. It even comes with training cartilages to ensure you know how to load and fire correctly.

Works very well
This is a really nasty thing to get hit with at close range…. it hurts! Face, neck, and spine hits can do permanent damage. Groin and upper chests hits will put an assailant down. The powder filling is nasty and a major irritant that works on most people – but not everyone – and should give you plenty of time to get away or do other things. The system is easy to use, and between the safety lever and a heavy trigger pull, won’t go off accidentally. If you have to keep it non-lethal, this is a good option.

Interesting
I came across this product and got it out of curiosity. I doubt I will actually use it. Although it saids non-lethal, I’m will still take this product seriously. The kit comes with the gun and 2 sets of pepper ball case, manual/instructions. There is a safety switch on the gun. Also comes with a “target” poster. I would say if that I will definitely need some proper training from a live trainer prior to using it.

HERO 2020 Pepperball Dispenser
This 2 shot Pepperball “gun” uses a self contained nitrogen cartridge to launch the pepper ball. Unlike the Byrna which uses a CO2 canister and looks very much like a real gun and has a 7 or 5 round magazines depending on the model. The HERO is much more compact as you would imagine. It’s relatively flat measuring about 1″ thick. You’ll need a pretty large pocket to conceal this and it’s probably going to be the only thing you have in that pocket. It’s doesn’t print like a gun, but definitely bulges. Construction appears to be robust. I think the ergonomics leave a lot to be desired. The grip is awkward and really doesn’t sit in you hand very securely. The 2 finger trigger is a disaster in my opinion. Gripping the “gun” I feel the tendency is to tighten up with your trigger fingers to push the “gun” back into your palm for a secure grip. Unlike a real gun where your trigger finger does nothing except fire the gun and your other fingers secure your grip, you have no choice but to put both fingers on the trigger to hold the gun. We all know from our universal firearm safety rules you do not put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire. This breaks that rule right out of the gate. A definite NO NO in my opinion. To be clear, you cannot hold the “gun” without putting your fingers on the trigger. The safety when switched to fire activates a laser and light. You could debate this either way, so it’s a personal preference. Inserting a cartridge is rather straight forward but requires 2 hands. One to hold the “gun” and depress the tiny level in the trigger guard while the other hand aligns the keyways on the cartridge into the receiver. Since reloads are most likely not going to happen, this is not a big deal. It’s a 2 shot and run away device. So who and what is this for? I suspect if you live in a state where you cannot carry a firearm or possibly for animal control. I have a Byrna and a Piexon JPX4, which I believe is the best non lethal device out there in a pistol format, I don’t carry any of therm. First off, they are too bulky to EDC in addition to my firearm. Secondly, I doubt their effectiveness and without a backup firearm, it you spray someone with any of these, you may just piss them off and further risk bodily harm. A simple and small canister of OC spray is easily carried and does the same job. Pulling out a device that looks like a firearm can only serve to escalate a bad situation. So make an informed decision and consider the options, alternatives and consequences of carrying a device like this. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security that this will protect you.

Very Professional w/ Safety in mind
Awesome product Hero has provided us! Really please with my purchase. I was nervous about the price, but once I had the product in hand, the price is definitely fair (compared to the overpriced and messy Byrna Self defense launcher)Key points:*The trigger does take some practice to feel confident pulling*Nice weight, but not too bulky*Virtually no recoil when firing the self defense tool*Light and laser themselves could be more of a deterrent than actually firing a pepper ball*Several features implemented for safety, and to help to use the product during a panic situation (practice practice practice)I pray I never have to use it, but I am grateful I have a non lethal option should God need me to protect myself and others.Just buy one already!!Blessings

Too Expensive to be practical
Never mind that this item which comes with one active and one training cartridge, is nearly $300. A initial cost is to be expected. The problem is you cannot reload just the ammo balls. You must purchase a new cartridge (2 shot). Training cartridges come as a 2-pack for about $20. So that’s about $5 per shot, just for training. Cartridges with active shots are about $7.25 per shot. (These estimates are before taxes.)Practice is crucial for competency and safety, but at $5 a shot I cannot afford it.

Very risky in an emergency
You have two shots in the riskiest minute of your life. You do not know how your assailant is armed. I recommend a crowd control spray by Fox that can spray over thirty feet, does not have to be charged, and is ready for years. About the size of a spray paint can, you will not miss, do not have to reload after your two shots during a “hectic time,” and can get out of there. Pointing a gun-like object will be mistaken for a gun, though you are using non[lethal. Is the person attacking you know what you’re using? Will they fire a real gun? Be careful, do not buy a black one that resembles a gun; police will also not know what you’re using if on the scene. Great if your assailant is not armed, which is rarer and rarer these days. They are not playing by your non-lethal rules or by any rules. Be very carful with these items.

What a Great Company and Product
Previously gave poor rating for Hero 2020. In the interim, the company has gone above and beyond to remedy the problem I was having: firing the gun. Closer attention to the instructions about how the trigger works was all on my side. The company also sent me a replacement gun to ensure my satisfaction. Included too was an added trigger tag that specifically addressed how pulling the trigger worked. Without a doubt, Hero provided a friendly, direct response to my concerns by phone. I completely endorse this product and its effectiveness.

Nice solution, but has a few drawbacks.
For a non-lethal personal defense option, this is a good choice. The core firing lower trigger assembly is pretty solid and well made. Having the LED and targeting laser always on then the system is armed is a great feature. No mistaking if it is armed or not in any situation.Positives:1. Compact, easier to conceal and comfortably carry.2. Legal in most states (check local regulations)3. Powerful deterrent even without firing.4. Reasonable system price (more on that in the negatives)Negatives:1. A little awkward to hold. Takes some getting used to. Middle two fingers on the trigger with index pointing forward with pinky having nowhere to go.2. Projectile canisters cannot be reloaded.3. Approximate cost per trigger pull of trainer (non pepper filled projectiles) is $5. This is an issue for me as the mantra of practice, practice, practice is good advice, but will get super costly. The manufacturer does state on their website that they are happy to recycle spent cartridges and provide a discount for future purchases, but does not publish what that discount is. I personally do not foresee it being to much, but some I guess is better than none at all.Overall this is a good product with the best intentions for non-lethal defense, but there are other products out there that offer 5-6 shots per clip etc, and are full size pistols if that is what you are after.

Protection when needed !
Hoping I won’t need to use this – but feel more confident & safe having it ! Nice size & weight.2 practice cartridges that you can reuse & 2 live cartridges. I thought pepper spray was the only defense available – really glad to find a more powerful , rechargeable , non-lethal protection ! Sturdy & durable !

Easy to use less than lethal
So this does what it says it will. It’s easy to use and I trained my daughter on it rather quickly. I have the same concern as other reviewers about the expense of buying the extra training rounds as well as replacement pepper balls for this gun. Due to these high extra costs it seems to me there are better options out there.

What if pepper spray wasn’t…spray?
If you want the psychological security blanket protection of solid projectiles but don’t want the ethical hangover of having seriously injured (or worse) your assailant (or someone you mistook as such), this might just be for you. It’s like having a compact paintball gun in your pocket except that instead of paint, it’s pepper spray and instead of carefully worn protective gear, carefully signed participation agreements, and agreed upon rules of engagement, there’s none of that troublesome “red tape.” Depending on which state you live in, you can just decide that you feel threatened, stand your ground, and possibly hospitalize someone with this…but at least it’s “non-lethal,” right?

Great non lethal alternative
I purchased a couple of pepper ball rounds so I could try its effectiveness. It works! This is accurate within 15m and delivers a cloud of nastiness. Be prepared to buy more cartridges. These are essentially single use and they are not cheap. But if you want to incapacitated without lethality, these will do the job.

Replacement cartridges are expensive
Due to its compact size and low weight, it may be easily concealed in a handbag. The automatic laser pointer is convenient; the laser can roughly pinpoint the impact site. When the safety is turned to the “Off” position, the light and laser activate, and the trigger becomes unlocked, making it possible to fire off a single shot with a single, strong pull. After two rounds, a little tab on the trigger guard drops the cartridges for reloading, and the trigger works in both the upper and lower chambers alternately.Replacement cartridges are too expensive and discourage one from target practice. Because of that, I am not sure how accurate or comfortable you would be if needing to use this?

Good option, but you have to remember to charge it once a month
This is a good option to have on hand. My biggest dislike is that you have to charge it and you have to remember to charge it at least once a month. If I forget to charge it then it will be useless. I do like that I can practice with it and that I can carry it or keep it anywhere. Sometimes I go places and they don’t allow firearms so this would be my alternative in that situation. I like that I can buy more training and active cartridges.

Small, light and easy to use
Several things to like about this solution for a non lethal self defense weapon. The size is good and operation is also easy and practically fool proof. Light and laser turn on when it’s armed. Off when it’s on safe. No mistaking whether it’s on or off.The only drawback I see is the inability to reuse the barrel and make use of other ammo. Seems that either the instructions are lacking and you can use other ammo or you must buy another 2 shot barrel assembly. For the live pepper rounds I don’t mind this much but for the training rounds it’s a bit much.Still I like the solution. It is a bit on the high end. I’d like to see it cost much less but it is a quality item so perhaps that’s just the cost of quality.

Pepper Ball Gun.
Here’s my husbands review of this crazy thing. 🤣4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️It is small and lightweight. Easy to handle and understand. I have only two complaints so far. On mine, the safety is backwards. So when it is on safe, the light and laser sight come on. Also, you can not test fire it to check the laser accuracy, without having to buy another clip with balls in it. It would be better if it was reloadable. Not lethal- just for safety purposes!

Empowering
Got this for my daughter who lives alone. Hopefully she’ll never have to use it. It’s small and easy to handle and it came with clear instructions. Not sure how much damage it may cause but it makes her feel safer knowing she has some sort of protection that should at least give her time to get away and get help.

Likely a decent deterrent
I like the idea of the HERO 2020. If you draw a firearm in a self defense situation, you need to be prepared to take a life and, when already in a stressful situation, that’s not something that can or should be easily done. While a lawsuit may still arise in these times, it’s likely to be a civil suit, whereas any time you shoot someone with a traditional firearm (regardless of the situation), you are basically guaranteed to find yourself as a defendant in a criminal suit. The HERO 2020 has a decent weight and, while it doesn’t look or feel anything like a “real gun,” it has a heft that feels serious in your hands as long as a cartridge is installed. When the safety is turned off, a laser and bright light automatically come on. For the most part, I like this because it not only ensures that you won’t accidently leave the safety off, but it serves as a warning to whoever you’re pointing it at that something bad is about to happen. Since clear articulation can be difficult in situations where something like this is used, it hopefully will serve as a reminder to the user to warn the intended target, hopefully avoiding conflict altogether. My biggest issue is the range. It’s optimal range is 12-15 feet and up to 20. Since it effectively creates a 3-6 foot cloud of tear gas, it’s basically useless at anything 10 feet or less because you’re likely to impact yourself. The requirement to charge it at least every three months (every month recommended) is also kind of a pain.I picked this up to provide my wife with some peace of mind when I’m not home and it’s meeting that need. Hopefully she never has to use it.

Should be a good dog deterrent, but I wouldn’t choose this for a human assailant.
My wife likes to walk around our neighborhood and once in a great while there are dogs out that will take an aggressive stance. She carries a “walking stick” and holding it up to them usually backs them down, but this should do the trick if they were to ever actually run at her.As for the device itself, it is very solidly constructed and small enough to comfortably fit in your pocket. It is mechanically sound and should last for years and handle being shot many times over. It comes with 2 cartridges that have 2 shots each. 1 is a practice cartridge that is filled with inert material and the other is the actual irritant powder. I wish it came with more “ammo”, or at least more practice shots. You can dry fire it (pull the trigger without a cartridge loaded) to get a feel for the trigger pull, but there is no substitute for actually firing a weapon to know it. You can purchase more cartridges from the company on their website but be warned, they are about $5 per shot for the practice shots and $7-8 per shot for the actual pepper ball shots. So live practice with this is a costly thing. Also, personally, I would NEVER use this on a human assailant unless I am 100% positive they are unarmed. If you point this at someone (including a police officer), odds are they will think it is a derringer or some other small gun and if they are armed, you will lose that fight. However, if it is all you have at the moment, hopefully it will be enough.

Less Than Lethal for my car
I have carried legally for years but its nice to have a less than lethal option for a less permanent result, like many of the police forces try to do now. Especially with the new youth movement in crime, particularly car jackings, I carry this in the car if a potential attacker(s) comes to my car window, to provide time and distance to try and deescalate or escape the situation before drawing my real weapon if needed. If I had a loved one who ventures into a high crime area often, I’d make sure they had one too.Its small enough and light enough, carrying in a purse, fanny pack, cargo short pocket or even jogging shorts shouldn’t be a problem like the weight of a handgun. The frame and cartridges being primarily made of plastic, the feel is much different than a handgun, not easily confused even by touch alone. The automatic light and laser is a nice, with the laser approximating the center point of impact and the light giving an intuitive feel for the diameter spread of the irritant.Operation is simple, even to the naive, as soon as you rotate the safety into the Off position the light and laser come on and the trigger unlocks, allowing you to unleash one round with a firm pull of the trigger. One little tab at the front of the trigger guard releases the cartridges for reloading after two shots, and the trigger operates alternately between upper and lower chamber. They lose one star as the replacement cartridges are expensive enough to discourage training. I understand the live cartridges being higher priced as they contain active ingredient that you only want to use in a real threat situation, but with any weapon, everyone who could potentially use it one day should train with it, and at roughly 10 bucks per trigger pull, how many actually will? An inexpensive reload program could help solve that issue?

An expensive solution
Perhaps if this wasn’t so gimmicky, I would be more comfortable giving it a higher rating. The idea of having a hard projectile in tandem with an irritant sounds good on paper, but in this form factor it just seems like an unnecessary extra step and point of failure. While it might protect you from getting irritant blown back on yourself via wind or whatever, you’re relying on hitting two shots on target during what might be the most stressful event of your entire life. Now, you could simply train and practice. Normally that would mitigate that factor as much as you reasonably can. However, that is a ridiculously expensive proposition with this device.I give this three stars because it is better than nothing and high quality, but not a good option overall. It is accurate and reliable (from what I can tell) though. Even then, I can’t say for sure just how reliable it is given the price to reload it.

Great concept, but reality has some flaws
Pepperball launchers have been around for a while, and can be a really effective deterrent. There’s plenty of video around of people getting completely and immediately incapacitated by them. This spin on that theme is interesting in that it uses non user-reloadable cartridges with a 2-year shelf life. This turns the whole deal into an expensive and inconvenient exercise. It’s too expensive to do any recurrent training with and most people won’t reliably replace the cartridges on schedule. Overall, I think it’s a bit of a flawed concept when better ones already exist.
