Gallium rare earth element industry

Ready to become a scientist and conduct your own experiments?

Gallium Metal is an amazing non-toxic element with fascinating properties for kids, teenagers, adults, or teachers to explore. Gallium is a silvery metallic conducting metal that is slightly brittle but at temperatures above 86°F it will melt into a liquid pool of metal.

Gallium is 6 times denser than water so holding and touching the liquid metal it is something you really have to experience for yourself.

Gallium expands as it solidifies so don’t keep it in a sealed glass container.

safe science experiment for kids

Safe To Use

Unlike other metals and liquids such as mercury, gallium is the only low-melting point metal that is safe to touch. Since it is safe for humans to hold, you can experiment with it using your bare hands without your skin getting irritated or feeling itchy.

Thanks to its non-harmful composition, even your little ones can touch this silvery gallium metal using their hands without any trouble.

washing gray residue stain

Washes Away Easily

Although it’s safe to touch using your bare hands, gallium metal tends to leave grayish stains on your skin because of its wet texture and oxidation. But this shouldn’t worry you one bit! All you have to do is clean your hands with warm water and soap, and you’ll be able to wash away all traces of the metal from your hand.

Be careful not to spill or touch surfaces with gallium or the residue as it will also leave gray marks on them. These can be removed with cleaning wipes.

Perfect For Different Projects

Since this metal can transition from liquid to metal and vice versa, it can form gallium crystals once it solidifies. Which often looks like a brilliant mirror. You can easily melt them down when done and do it again.

Difficult to believe this is really gallium!

I bought this ($40 for a tiny tube) for a science project with grandkids. Gallium becomes changes phases between liquid and solid at around 86 degrees F. I poured some of this material onto a small plate and put the plate into the refrigerator. It never became solid.

    Thumbs up

The packaging was mediocre, a tube of solid galium in a baggy. Not sure if the tube didn’t seal fully or just the nature of shipping galium means it’s going to make the baggy a bit messy. But it made for a great experiment with the kids and did the cool stuff seen on YouTube videos so thumbs up for me.

    Does the job

Came in a sealed tube, melted easily enough by placing it between my thighs, or submerging it in hot water for a few minutes. Placed a drop about as big as a dime on the underside of a beer can. Some hours later, I was able to easily poke a hole straight through the can, and tear pieces off like it was made of tissue paper, fun!

    Meltable Metal

I have not played with it yet. I needed a metal that I could use to make a stamp for stamping leather. I got mixed results but not because the metal was inferior or insufficient. I was quite pleased it came in a test tube it was easily melted in warm water,, and I was quite pleased to have been able to handle it

    So fun

It’s a fun and neat way to introduce the young ones into the sciences and the weird wonderful world we live in . When I was young we actually got to play with mercury. It was known to be dangerous but with a few safety precautions we still were able to do that. Thankfully today that’s not common place but I remember how fascinating it was to see this metal be a solid then a liquid and all the crazy ways it could be manipulated to do amazing things. This product as close as you can get ( outside of a lab ) to what I experienced as a kid and it is just as fun and awe inspiring and down right amazing without all the safety concerns. You still should practice safe handling and observe all safety procedures because it just makes sense but you will see the little (and some grown) minds be blown at the neat things you can do with gallium. Do a little research order some that will come in a vile handy vile make some molds, then melt them in your hand and push the puddle of Liquid Metal around in your palms and look into the wide eyes watching the magic you making happen .. So much fun

    Elemental Fun

Super cool! Got this as a gift. It really melts, slowly, in my hand if my hand is warm enough. Melts at 85 F / 30 C and when melted it looks like mercury but this stuff is not toxic. Did a little research and found that it is not toxic in its pure form but I wouldn’t intentionally eat it. It was a bit difficult to remove from the vial it came in. The trick is to submerge the vial in hot water (I used hot water from the tap) until the outer layer melts. Then the entire slug slides right out. Keep it away from carpet. If you spill some on a hard floor, let it cool and then scrape it off with a credit card. It leaves a gray residue on your hands that takes a little work to remove. Just scrub with soap and warm/hot water. Gallium is fun to play with and to show friends.

  14. John Henschen

    4.0 out of 5 stars

Well packaged, but doesn’t melt nearly as quickly as I assumed it would.

I had a heck of a time getting it out of the tube. I had to heat up water to 200 degrees and let the tube sit in it for a good 10-15 minutes before I could pour it out. I poured it into the ziplock bag it came in and layed it flat in my fridge. I wanted it thinner to see if body heat could melt it. After it solidified and thinned out to about 2mm thick, I left it in the bag and put it my armpit and sat and watched tv for about 10 minutes. Might sound weird, but it’s probably the most consistently warm place on my body without you know… inserting it anywhere. To my surprise, only a paper thin layer had melted. I don’t know if this is normal or if maybe this batch isn’t as pure as I’d hoped, but… it’s still kinda neat so I gave it 4 stars. I expected it to be much more… melty. *sad face*

Happy with purchase. Note metal came in a plastic bottle which was very important as Gallium expands going from 31oC to 29oC.

    Product As Described

I put 5 stars for warmth, but I dont understand what is being rated. I just want to make sure that this product gets a 5 star rating. The product isn’t physically warm as its a solid metal. It does melt at expected temps though and is neat to have. And fun for any chemistry enthusiasts or anyone with interest.

Good to have fun, but be careful

Is definitely what it says.. If you didn’t already know about it, be EXTREMELY careful getting this stuff around aluminum. Will literally turn anything made out of it (aluminum) into brittle, crumbling bits, upon touching it once. This is not a toy for unsupervised children.

    Works great

Its gallium. As long as you know what you’re doing with it, its fun to play with. Just be super careful around stuff like, any aluminum (dissolves it in very short order!) carpets, cloth (sticks like crazy) and never swallow it! Apparently safe on your skin though… but messy! Its elemental gallium!
