Fantastic machine for playing vintage catridges

The media could not be loaded.

The 2600+ is the best modern solution for playing all your original cartridges. I’ve cleaned and successfully tested 30 vintage cartridges, all work perfectly fine on this console. Those customers with issues, I suggest cleaning the pins on your original carts – could make all the difference. The new joystick is stiff but it’s also very responsive. It does not require a ton of pressure or force to get it to operate as desired or intended. Visually these games look fantastic and you have options on your screen aspect ratio and there’s even an option to change the screen to black and white.Does include USB and HDMI cables. The only draw back for me is I had to buy a second controller; I do wish they had included two from the start.

    Doesn’t play Activision games

I bought this because the Atari Flashback didn’t include oddities like Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET and Return of the Jedi, games I already own on cartridge. It will play the original Atari and Coleco cartridges (Donkey Kong, etc). It doesn’t play my Activision games. Unfortunately, Activision made most of the “good” 2600 games so you’re stuck with the mediocre at best (great in 1982, mind you) Atari titles. So, after having a nostalgic laugh at what we actually played in the early 80s, you’ll likely set this aside (in my case, next to my original console) for another 40 years. As others have mentioned, the HDMI cord is too short for comfortable viewing on a TV larger than 30”. Drawbacks aside, the console looks fantastic and it was fun playing the games I last saw when I was 13.

    Plays Original Cartridges Flawlessly

Plays my original 80’s cartridges perfectly. I had over 40 tucked away since the 80’s. Only one didn’t play anymore, but I am sure that is due to age, not the new system. Extremely happy!

Very good for old gamers and new gamers alike.

This product is everything you could ask for in a 1to1 remake of the atari 2600 although my only complaint is I believe it is an emulator machine. I do like it as it added some newer QoL features the original didn’t have.

    Bring back the memories!

First I want to address the reviewer that gave it one star for no power cord. How many of those cords do ya have laying around the house that’s not being used? Not a huge deal and certainly not enough to drop it down to one star.Ok now that being said it takes a usb-c cord and plug. I’m gonna say now the cord that’s included is not long at all. If you have a 6ft cord use that with a USB plug. Then store the one included away or use it for you phone or something. Like I said not a big deal. The controller is slightly stiff. Maybe a hair stuffed. It took a while to adjust as it’s been 25 years+ since I played an actual 2600 that wasn’t in a collection.A couple games it took a few tries to get started. It’s expected because it runs off emulation even though you need a cart to play. Easily fixed just by hitting reset a couple times. All the games I have seemed to work (and I have a lot.). To my knowledge there’s only 4 games that don’t work. You can find a compatibility list on the Atari site.My 7 year old nephew loves it. He loved that it wasn’t over complicated in playing. It’s about 20% smaller than the og. Great if space is an issue.Over all great system. Simple. Fun. And everyone can play. Doesn’t get better than that

    Back in the 1980s again

I am not used to seeing my old Atari 2600 with a smaller footprint than the original, the switches are in their original order of configuration, However the old Channel 3/4 switch is not 4:3 or 16:19 screen modes. I wish the 2600+ came the same way as the 1980 series with the 2 paddles and 2 joysticks, power adapter instead now you need to obtain a USB charger brick, game and tv switch which now is not necessary being that its now HDMI instead of an RCA RF cable. As many have said about the power cable and HDMI cables being to short to move the console away from the TV, I got a 10ft HDMI cable as well as a 10ft USB to USB-C cable to alleviate that problem as well as getting the second joystick and paddle bundle with the 4 in 1 cartridge, so in conclusion I wish the 2600+ was bundled with 2 joystick and 2 paddles like the original as now you have to buy it seperate, so which is better: the 1 game cartridge, 2 joystick and 2 paddles vs 1 joystick and 10 in 1 cartridge bundles?? in comparison to then and now! As HDMI ports on TVs can be very delicate, I even bought an HDMI switch box to eliminate the need of plugging and unplugging the Atari 2600+ HDMI on the TV’s HDMI port!

My first video game system was the Atari 2600 in 1978 and I still have it!

I have my original Atari 2600 and it still works but the video hook-up is a little wonky, so this is just what I needed to keep the fires burning for my first love! At least gaming love! It has an HDMI port, is powered by USB and uses the original cartridges! It is an emulator so aftermarket hack carts will not work as far as I know but carts are still available! so much fun to play with and it looks great on my 4K TV!

    Mostly great

Ability to easily connect and play industry creating content on a modern display . When the cartridges load that is. Even the included cartridge suffers from inconsistency when attempting to load game to play. Old cartridges could be excused but brand new one? Hmm… that said when they do load the likes of Frogger , Pitfall & River Raid have never been more fun.

    Other controllers do not work

What I definitely like is hooking it up to your HDMI. The only problem is the keyboard controller, but driving controller. The video pad for star raiders does not work. Hopefully Atari got the news about this and will get more firmware to update this but I have a lot of other cartridges, that worked great

    Amazing nostalgic experience

I had an Atari growing up. The console is long gone however I do have my original games from when I was a kid. It has been amazing playing those games on this console. It’s everything I had hoped for and more. No regrets, I would buy this again and again. Atari did an amazing job, I can’t say enough good things about this console. Hardware is sturdy and feels well made.

Exactly what I remember it as

A few months ago I got to check out the Atari 2600+ at Portland Retro Gaming Expo and I instantly fell in love with the design the build quality and the 10 games which only a few are exclusively two player the only thing that could have made it better is if it came with two controllers I see a lot of reviewers online talking about how the cx40+ are too stiff but honestly depending on the game they work perfect if you need more precise gameplay like top down shooters I’d suggest getting the hyperkin controller I’ve tried well over a dozen of my 2600 cartridges and they all worked with the console just some needed cleaning I am definitely happy with my purchase

    So Awesome!

This unit is so awesome! Even though I have a working original 2600 still from my childhood, I decided to buy this one anyway because it has the HDMI hookup and also the screen graphics are better. I use all my original game cassettes, controllers from my original game and they all work great with it. If you are a Gen Xer like me, and had an Atari 2600 as a kid, this is the way to go! It does come with one new joystick and it and a 10 in one game cassette, just in case you don’t have any of the original stuff. If you want a second joystick, or different controllers, or other games you’ll have to purchase those separately. It definitely was worth $129.

Absolute must have for retro gamers, especially if you have all your old Atari cartridges!

I am a retro gamer. I have built emulation boxes and have purchased addons to them that bring back the memories of playing the systems I had as a kid. The Atari 2600+ is the best plug and play retro system that does not require any setup or programing to work. Whether you are playing one of the games on the 10 in 1 cartridge that is included, or you are digging out your old 2600 or 7800 games from your parents (or your) attic, you are going to absolutely love this system. I spent the entire night playing all my old favorites. The controller is pretty close to the original, maybe just a little tighter. The footprint of the system is much smaller and lighter than the original 2600. It is now perfect for taking it over to friends houses. The system is powered with a usb-c cable. Unlike what another reviewer stated, the system does come with the power cable. It is a usb-a to usb-c cable. What it doesn’t come with is a power block, which you really do not need as you can plug the included usb cable into your tv’s usb port and power it.This is an absolutely amazing retro system and is a definite ten in my book.

    amazing

I am writing a review on my mom’s account. I wasn’t born in 1980, so I didn’t get to play the original Atari. I played on one at my uncle’s house, and I loved it. When I got home, I started shopping on eBay, but all the Ataris there were broken or too expensive. So, I went to Amazon and found this one, the controller gets less stiff the more you use it. I play it every day now.

Fantastic system capable of playing most of my old Atari carts

Wow, Atari really nailed this system. I have an old Atari heavy sixer, but it’s so nice to have a 2600 that’s capable of hooking to a modern tv without having to troubleshoot. The picture quality is superb at 720p for these older games. The quality of the system is top notch and I look forward to playing some of the new releases for the 2600. I really hope Atari continues down this path and doubles down on supporting this wonderful console. I think Atari has a winner on their hands if they support it properly with new games and re-releases of older games!

Atari for modern ages, developer forgot how modern tvs are set up.

I love this for what it is. It does look and feel like the original, taking you back to yesteryear with its operation. Unfortunately, unless you want to to stand in front of your wall mounted TV you will be waiting for longer cables to come to be able to enjoy it. The HDMI is roughly 4ft, which just about gets you to the entertainment stand and back out, near floor level of your wall mounted TV, but no further, and if you can find a power brick for this, which I had to actually purchase since it doesn’t come with one for some reason, the electric and the power cords will not allow you to cable manage and pull this thing out like in the old days, middle of the floor, joystick cable reaching to the couch. Standing and playing is about the only option out of the Box for me, and alot of people I suspect. Manufacturer should have thought a bit more and provided longer cords or charged less and provided neither. Sort of a waste in the end. Nostalgia near fail, because it has not been adapted to modern era with the exception of the connection.

    Just darn cool

Yeah, it’s an emulation box – but one of the better (best?) ones out there. Think if Nintendo allowed cartridges on the NES or SNES minis (and made the console a little larger) and that is kind of what you have here with Atari’s offering.Controllers and games (including the 10-in-1 and new ones being produced) work in the old Atari’s as well as vice versa (that includes your original controllers too). There are a small amount of games that don’t work and a lot of homebrew doesn’t (to be expected on emulation machines), however (as seen in the picture) I was able to boot up a rather obscure PAL multicart from Australia and it worked (though Ice Hockey was played on a black screen instead of white).Like another reviewer stated, maintaining old Atari units are getting cumbersome and are more and more for the hardcore hobbyists and tinkerers. Those who just want to play their old games and maintain a collection of Atari carts they can easily play will love this little unit. That goes for me who dug up my old carts a few months ago but haven’t been able to test my original 2600 to see if it even works (let alone try to figure out the cable math to hook it up to a modern TV). This thing is just easy and fun.It doesn’t come with a power plug but the USB will plug into any TV with a USB port and will power the console that way (so you don’t need an extra wall adapter if you don’t want to use one). Everything else looks and feels like the original 2600, which is kinda wild.I’d probably give it a 4.5 in a vacuum, but will give Atari the benefit of the doubt as far as furthering game compatibilities with updates as well as supporting future original 2600/7800 game releases. This has the potential to breathe a lot of life into retro gaming as whole and I’m all for it.

ATARI 2600+ More than meets the eye

What the Atari company did here was genius and could inspire others to breath life into game libraries a lot of people already have but can not play due to hardware limitations after 40+ years. I was disappointed initially, the original ship date was November 16th but it got delayed a week which stinks because my birthday is the 17th and I was ready to play this all night before a day off work to celebrate. Oh well – it arrived today a week later. I am not disappointed at all, the packaging was great and the system was presented when opening the box in a way that showcases its early video game technology beauty – the simplicity of the Atari 2600 design is one of the things that makes it so iconic, there’s a reason they have one of the originals like the one I have sitting next to my new Atari 2600+ in the Smithsonian. There was no USB brick plug included – no issue – this is a modern system to play 40+ year old games – I plugged the USB into my HD TV and the HDMI in and away I went. This console brings life to an aged game collection. As many people buying this may know – the console does not actually play the game off the cartridge – it reads it for what title it is and emulates it and works for the majority of Atari titles. This is fantastic because while most of my carts still worked ok the coloring and lighting in some titles was often flawed which is to be expected from games that are pushing 5 decades old. That all changes with the Atari 2600+ – the carts go in without any effort the game loads up from onboard emulation machine within seconds and all I can say is WOW! The colors, the sounds, the textures within the games, they all look incredible in full HD. Some people are purists, and I will never stop using my original hardware – but to see this done by Atari to a truly landmark system brings a tear to my eyes. I wish more companies would give their old games this treatment – because the reality is the console isn’t the focal point here – it’s making a massive library of games playable again with modern hardware. I can not recommend this product enough to anyone that likes Atari games, and hats off to the new owners of the Atari brand name for putting something like this on the market, a bold choice I would love to see more players in the video game market follow in this direction. Old games are abundant and cheap and the hardware options out there are not getting younger – I can only hope we see this trend take off.

    Excellent Reproduction

I love this reproduction of the Atari 2600, and I’m hoping that Atari will ensure it goes beyond that. I have a box of old 2600 carts and it’s been fun to pull them out and play them with my family. The system using emulation rather than FPGA, but it still works great and recreates that feel of the original system. It plays Atari 7800 games too, which are much more impressive – Xevious in particular is incredible (and easy to find).I’m excited about Mr. Run and Jump, as well as the ‘enhanced’ version of Berserk, but I haven’t received them yet. I’m hoping that Atari will release more updated games and new games to play on this system. I also wrote to them and suggested adding a dongle to support its own updated wireless joystick, made for the VCS. The pack-in joystick that comes with this system is faithful to a fault – it’s stiff and lacks the clicky-ness of modern arcade sticks. It also won’t work with two-button 7800 games like Pole Position 2. I picked up a Hyperkin Ranger controller and would recommend that over a second Atari stick.Notes:FYI while original Genesis controllers may appear to fit, some of the pins inside are designed to be reversed, so they will not work on the Atari.I was able to use the power cord packed in with this system to simply plug into a power strip I have with a USB outlet – works perfectly.

    Do not buy!

First, it was difficult to get it installed. Second, it has 4 little switches that are too small for someone who remembers playing on the original Atari can’t make them switch – they are little dip switches and difficult to manipulate. Third, there’s no instruction book on any of the games or how to get a smart TV to recognize it. Fourth, none of the games are the old Atari games we know and love. No Pong, no Galaga, nothing even similar.Fifth, the cable for the joystick is only about 4 feet long, so you better want to sit closer to the TV than we did when we were kids.Sixth, you have to go back to the unit and switch games (using the dip switches) then hit reset to play a different game. Not even a menu you can go to from the joystick. It was money wasted.

If you want to play Atari cartridges on an HDTV, this is a great way to do it

The 2600+ plays Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges. If you already own some carts or want to collect them, this is a great way to play them on a modern TV with HDMI.The build quality of the 2600+ console and joystick is quite solid. And it looks just like an original 2600, albeit sized down a bit by 20%. So it’s smaller than the original but not too small in my opinion. It currently plays 39 out of 40 of my carts and I understand there are a few other officially released carts not supported yet. Atari is currently working on a firmware update to address those games and it should be released shortly. Check out the Atariage 2600+ forum for the latest information.Several 7800 games require a 2-button joystick to play properly but the 2600 joystick only has 1 fire button. Atari will be releasing a new 7800 2-button gamepad to address this. I wish they had released this gamepad at launch. But if you have an original 7800 controller it will work with the 2600+. (As will any original 2600 controller for all 1-button games.)The box does not come with a power block, but any USB power block will work with it. I have a drawer full of those laying around so this was not an issue. The console can also be plugged directly into the USB port of your TV if it has one.Overall this is a very nice piece of hardware and with updates it will get even better. Highly recommended if you want an authentic looking and feeling Atari 2600 experience on a modern TV.4.5 Stars overall. I will reevaluate after the new firmware is released and when they release a 7800 controller.Update: I see a few reviews mentioning that their cartridges would not load. Atari cartridges are multiple decades old at this point. The metal contacts on the carts need to be cleaned. Just clean them with isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip. (See YouTube if you need a demo.) I had several carts that did not load initially, that work fine now once properly cleaned.

It does come with a Power cord

I don’t know why the person gave it one star and said it didn’t come with a power cord.It comes with 2 cords (both Atari-branded, btw). USB-C and HDMI.If you have a modern TV with at least 1 USB input, you can power it off your TV, otherwise you’ll need a power brick. It’s a great device. Such a great unboxing experience, it looks great, sounds great and is made well. The games look fantastic on HDMI. There’s gonna be some compatibility issues. Some controllers won’t work, like it wont work with the old keypads used for Star Raiders. It won’t work well with Genesis controllers. It does work well with Hyperkin Ranger controllers. There are more issues if you are in a country that is PAL and not NTSC. But hopefully these will eventually be resolved.A great gift.

Atari 2600 in hd with a couple drawbacks

If you have an Atari 2600 library this is a very appealing product. Hooking up to hd tvs no prob is great and it works with all the old 2600 games. There are a couple drawback: You need a usb to outlet converter that doesn’t come with the system for power and Sega controllers that work great on the original model don’t work at all with the 2600+. I’m quite happy with the 2600+ but i’m waiting for a controller with a d-pad that works. The stick that comes with the system is stiff and not ideal or me.

Atari CX-2600 Collections Work Correctly Again!

This was such a thrill to activate this unit. Many of us 20th century gamers grew up with the 6507-equipped CX-2600 with its 160×192 pixels in 128 colors with 128 bytes of RAM in a RIOT chip. We still have the dozens, even hundreds of cartridges and controllers, but our ability to maintain our heavy-sixers and light-fours is steadily waning away.We can rebuild our boards with capacitor and resistor kits, but the CPU chip is impossible to find. Also, the video played on a modern video panel jitters and flickers. All of these problems are now gone. This new unit plugs right in and goes to work without a hiccup. The old controllers plug right in and work. Games do the same. The unit is of quality construction on the outside though the switches are very clunky. Image reproduction is excellent with 4:3 and 16:9 ratios available. The slow downs: 1. finding a wall nub with a USB-C connector to plug into this unit is necessary; just as in the 1970s, everything here is strung together by short wires which means gamers have to sit up close to their huge video panels to play games; the unit is in a reduced size similar to the Atari flashback series of consoles; the included cartridge has dip switches which all original games did not have; it’s a shame this unit does not play the 5600 series games.I highly recommend this unit. Giving up on updating and maintaining our forty five year old consoles is now possible. The buyer will not regret this purchase and play Atari for another forty years.

    Love it!

I was so excited when I saw Atari was re-releasing the 2600. I have about fifty 2600 games but my vintage system didn’t run properly, and this release solved that problem for me!I set it up within 5 minutes; it was super easy. I already had the USB to C block, and the HDMI just plugged right into the TV.The controller that came with the system is stiff, but I also had a few original controllers, and they work great in the new system. I’d recommend looking for an original controller to use, or you may just need to be patient and brake it in.The cords are a huge negative; they’re so short that you’ll need to basically sit in front of the TV to play, and even at that, the cords are stretched thin. The system works great, but it is disappointing that additional purchases are going to need to be made (controller, longer HDMI cords, USB to C block, etc.) to play.Overall, it was definitely worth it to be able to play all the games I had.

Only for those who played this in the 70’s

This adaptation game is almost as good as in the 70’s. It’s great on the current televisions, even the large screens (I have a 48inch). The new game accepted my original game catridges, but I had to try several times before the paddle-stick controllers worked. This does NOT come with the paddle controllers, it only comes with 1 joystick controller. Although the games worked as they originally did, I did feel that this recreated system is a little less fluid than the original game. The new game played well, but I don’t think the new generation will be attracted to this compared to the Xbox, Playstation, etc. This is more for nastalgia. I am grateful though, that my Atari cartridges, and the fun I used to have is rebirthed.

Memories – I Can Even Play the Original Games

The media could not be loaded.

I think the first thing that comes to mind with the old Atari 2600 was the design. This new Atari 2600+ looks just like it but it is a little smaller. I love the HDMI port, I connected my 72 in 4K TV to it with no issues. It comes with 10 games, but to be honest, I wanted to try out my old original cartridges. I got out the unforgettable Pac-Man game and Space Invaders, they worked like a charm. Mind you, this new Atari 2600+ does not come these two games, they are from my personal collection. Then I tried my old 7800 cartridge games. Those worked as well. Atari really did a fantastic job with this system. If you are ready to go back down memory lane, drag out some old game cartridges and get playing, this system is for you. I will say that those strange off brand game cartridges that came out way back when, didn’t seem to work for me. They were pretty cheesy anyway. This new Atari 2600+ comes with 1 joystick. It’s pretty stiff. You will need to break it in a bit or better yet, plug in your old joystick. Have fun!

    Retro fun

This gets you in the GenX feels of the 80s. The device is an excellent replica of the original Atari 2600. It plays my old game cartridges just fine. The joystick even feels tight like the original as well.Treat yourself to this trip down memory lane.

Awesome console! I love it. So many memories…

First of all, I think it’s really really cool that I’m actually buying Atari 2600 cartridges again in 2023. I think I bought my last one in 1982. So far, it’s played the vast majority of cartridges that I’ve thrown at it. A few reviews are complaining that some of their cartridges ‘do not work’ with this system. The reality is that these cartridges all play just fine HOWEVER your cartridge may not be good any more. These cartridges are over 40 years old people — it’s amazing that most actually work, but some do not. Recently, I plugged in a River Raid that failed to load but I put in another River Raid and it loaded just fine. Don’t blame the new system for damage done on cartridges approaching a half century in age.

Love the look and built quality

Love the look and build quality of this and takes me back to the early 80’s in retro gaming. I have played 2600 and 7800 games on this.Pros you get a gaming console that plays 7800 and 2600 games on in one unit. Also you get picture perfect 4×3 and 16×9 ratios over HDMI.Cons you will be getting a longer USB cord and HDMI cord and a power brick.Who is this for? Well it’s for the retro gaming community that has cartridges or is willing to collect the cartridges. And also for a hassle free hooking up to modern TV’s.Improvements that I see is update the software to play all games like Omega Race and able to play multi carts with complete library on them.

    Great product

It has the same feel as the original Atari, with improved connection to the tv, even has a swith to see it in black and white for those who played the original Atari y a black and white TV.Sound of the games and graphics 100% same as the original console.

    Love the nostalgic feel.

Just received this Atari and I can say without a doubt it does take me back to my childhood. The one thing I would tell anyone that’s using it is remember that the system is new but the games are not so sometimes the games may not load. Very pleased with my purchase overall.

Perfect throwback and plays original games

A great system that plays original games without a hitch. It also is compatible with original controllers. The HDMI allows for crystal clear sharp images. PERFECT!

Great to be able to play the old games again

If you have old Atari games in the attic, this is a must have. It allows you to play your old favorites on a modern TV via an HDMI cable. Some of my old games wouldn’t work at first, but after cleaning the contacts on the cartidge (it has been over 20 years since they were last played), they worked.

wanted it to be great but

i had high hopes for this to work well.to start the controller is very very very Stiff it dont feel good at all. buy Hyperkin “Ranger” Premium Wired Gamepad for Atari 2600. works well with it, makes playing games so much smoother also had build-in paddle also the sticker on the game disk is upside down. i really wish they had a better controller and add few more games. im keeping it cause of the looks.

    Better than the original

Graphics are clear as HDMI would suggest. Plug the USB C power cable into TV and of you go. Plays my vintage games also.

    Important things to know

Only includes one joystick. Buy an aftermarket second joystick as the official Atari one is out of stock.Instructions are minimal.Dip switch settings for the 10 game cartridge are on the cartridge sleeve- so do not discard.I understand now why my dad always beat me at these games as a kid. They are harder for young kids to control the joystick than the Nintendo controller is.

    Great system

It played some of my old Atari cartridges. My only complaint is It doesn’t come with a power adapter and a second remote also games with special hardware like the ram carts or some homebrew games might not work with it because it’s emulation

    I’m disappointed

I’m an avid retro gamer I preordered this item when it became available I was beyond excited to play it when I got it I played for a couple days with my small collection of cartridges and had no issues and yes my cartridges were clean the day before yesterday I was playing my collection and it wouldn’t boot any games anymore it would just go to the atari logo screen and it only does this now I have tried everything plugging and unplugging , trying different cartridges, holding down the games reset while turning it on , everything and nothing worked …… I called “product support” via Amazon website and they didn’t even have answers for me I’m truly disappointed that for a 130 they wouldn’t even have a soft reset for this console anyway I’m getting a refund and I’m going to order another if this happens again I’m getting a refund indefinitely for something that has the legacy of Atari’s name on it they did a piss poor job for programming ……. 2 stars for presentation

Beautiful, crisp picture, but some issues

I really wanted this to replace my old 2600 unit (modded with S-Video), but there are a couple major issues. I don’t mind dip switches for changing the 10-in-1 cart, but some of my classic carts won’t load at all, even though they work on my 2600. Mountain King, Starmaster, Cosmic Ark – none of those load. Space Invaders and Ms. Pac Man load fine, but there seems to be an issue with the sound where the first sound channel plays nothing unless an additional sound is also playing.Maybe some of these issues will be addressed by a future software update. If so, I will re-buy, but given the new Atari’s recent history, I can’t count on it, so this is going back for now. Too bad, because it’s a nice unit and the new classic joysticks are nice and solid.
